Propane-powered forklifts keep warehouses, distribution centers, manufacturing plants, and construction sites moving efficiently every day. But safe cylinder handling is non-negotiable — one small mistake can lead to leaks, pressure issues, or serious incidents.
At Mid-Atlantic Propane Exchange, safety is built into every exchange we perform. Here are essential reminders for every business that relies on propane forklifts:
Key Safety Steps for Forklift Propane Cylinders
- Secure cylinders properly on the forklift — Use the manufacturer-approved mounting bracket or strap system. Loose cylinders can shift, damage valves, or cause instability during operation.
- Always close the service valve before disconnecting — This prevents any residual propane from escaping and eliminates the risk of uncontrolled release when removing the cylinder.
- Never drop, roll, or drag cylinders — Dropping can damage valves, collars, or the cylinder shell. Rolling can cause the valve to shear off or create impact damage. Always lift and carry using proper equipment or two-person technique.
- Store cylinders in properly labeled cages — Use designated, well-ventilated, secure storage cages clearly marked “Propane – No Smoking or Open Flame.” Keep cylinders protected from vehicle traffic or falling objects.
- Relief valves must be in the 12 o’clock position — When storing upright, the pressure relief valve should face straight up. This ensures safe venting if pressure builds (the vent is designed to release upward, away from people or equipment).
- Inspect every cylinder before installation — Look for dents, rust, gouges, damaged valves, missing O-rings, or expired certification dates. If anything looks wrong, do not use it — return it to us for immediate replacement.
