Propane is a powerful, efficient fuel that keeps forklifts running, warehouses warm, construction sites active, and outdoor dining profitable. But like any fuel, it demands respect and proper handling. At Mid-Atlantic Propane Exchange, safety is our top priority — and we want to help you keep your business safe too.
Here are essential propane safety practices every business should follow:
Safe Handling Basics
- Never drop, roll, or drag cylinders — Impact can damage valves or the cylinder shell, creating serious leak risks. Always lift and carry properly.
- Close the service valve before disconnecting — This prevents propane from escaping during removal or transport.
- Protect the valve — Use the safety cap or collar whenever moving or storing a cylinder. Never lift by the valve or regulator.
- Inspect before every use — Check for dents, rust, gouges, damaged valves, or expired certification dates. If anything looks wrong, set it aside and call us for a free replacement.
Safe Storage Practices
- Use a designated, labeled propane cage — Clearly mark it “Propane – No Smoking or Open Flame.” Keep it well-ventilated and away from exits or ignition sources.
- Store cylinders upright — Relief valves must face straight up (12 o’clock position) for safe venting if pressure builds.
- Keep away from heat sources — Maintain at least 20 feet from open flames, welding, or high-heat equipment.
- Secure against tipping — Use chains or straps to prevent cylinders from falling, especially in high-traffic or outdoor areas.
Why These Steps Matter
Following basic propane safety practices protects your employees, prevents costly downtime, reduces the risk of fire or leaks, and keeps you compliant with OSHA, DOT, and local fire codes.
A few minutes of attention can prevent major headaches — or worse.
