Connecting a propane cylinder to a forklift takes only a few minutes — but doing it safely is essential. Proper connection procedures help prevent injuries, equipment damage, and workplace fires.
At Mid-Atlantic Propane Exchange, we want every operator to follow these important safety steps every single time:
Safe Propane Cylinder Connection Checklist
- Park the forklift on a level surface, set the parking brake, and turn the engine off.
- Wear appropriate PPE, including gloves and eye protection.
- Inspect the propane cylinder for damage, excessive rust, dents, or leaks before installation.
- Verify the cylinder is the correct type and properly mounted with the locating pin seated in the designated slot.
- Secure the cylinder firmly in the mounting bracket before connecting the fuel line.
- Check the connector and O-ring for wear or damage. Never use a damaged fitting.
- Hand-tighten the fuel connector — do not use tools to force the connection.
- Slowly open the service valve.
- Perform a leak check. Listen for hissing, smell for propane odor, or use an approved leak-detection solution.
- If a leak is detected, immediately close the valve, disconnect the cylinder, and remove it from service.
Safety Reminder
Never smoke or allow open flames, sparks, or ignition sources near propane cylinder change-out areas.
Taking these extra moments during cylinder changes can prevent serious incidents and keep your team safe.
