Safe Handling Practices
- Never drop, roll, drag, or throw cylinders — Impact can damage valves, collars, or the cylinder shell, creating leak risks. Always lift and carry using proper equipment or two-person technique.
- Close the service valve before disconnecting — This prevents any residual propane from escaping during removal or transport.
- Transport cylinders upright and secured — Use approved straps, brackets, or carts. Never lay cylinders on their side in vehicles unless they’re DOT-approved for horizontal transport.
- Keep valves protected — Always use the protective cap or collar when moving or storing cylinders. Never lift a cylinder by the valve or regulator.
- Inspect before every use — Check for dents, rust, gouges, damaged valves, missing O-rings, or expired certification dates (stamped on the collar). If anything looks wrong, do not use it — return it to us for free replacement.
Safe Storage Practices
- Use designated, labeled propane storage cages — Clearly mark cages “Propane – No Smoking or Open Flame.” Keep them well-ventilated, away from exits, stairways, and ignition sources.
- Store cylinders upright — Relief valves must face up (12 o’clock position) to safely vent pressure if needed. Never store cylinders on their side unless they are DOT-approved for horizontal storage.
- Keep cylinders away from heat sources — Maintain at least 20 feet from open flames, welding, or high-heat equipment. Never store in direct sunlight or enclosed spaces without ventilation.
- Limit quantity indoors — Follow NFPA 58 and local fire code limits for indoor storage (usually 300 lb water capacity total indoors without special permits).
- Secure against tipping & tampering — Use chains, straps, or locking cages to prevent unauthorized access or accidental tipping.
